The Organic Bug Book is a richly illustrated children's story by farmer, Chris Korrow. The book is an intelligent and entertaining resource for encouraging children to become involved in a garden or simply to help them understand and appreciate common backyard insects. 

There are about 1,600,000 different species of plants and animals on Earth. Almost 900,000 of those are insects! In 2001, expenditures for pesticides worldwide for agriculture was almost $32 billion U.S. In his “Resources for Parents,” Chris Korrow suggests,

“Begin by considering that there is a reason for every creature and every process in an organic garden. More than just growing something, the gardener is managing an entire ecosystem. The gardener must have an awareness of what is happening in his or her garden. How to do this? It’s simple—spend time in the garden, watching and observing. If you notice insect damage, check under the leaves of the plants, poke around in the soil at the base of plants. You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn about insect pests.”

The Organic Bug Book is based on Korrow's award-winning film, Garden Insects (as seen on PBS). 

After two decades of living off the grid, and homeschooling his two daughters on a biodynamic Kentucky farm, he was inspired to create this book with the hopes that it would inspire gown-ups to get outside and into their gardens with children.

Chris is putting the finishing touches on his full color children's book, The Organic Bug Book (forthcoming from SteinerBooks). The book is based on his documentary Garden Insects and it is the story of his relationship with bugs interspersed with facts about insects.

The text has been through a final edit, and the last images are being converted to CMYK!

Garden Insects to Air on PBS this Summer

Chris's award winning film is scheduled to air a number of times on PBS stations across the US during June and July. Check your local listings.

Time to Prepare Your Garden for Spring

This is the perfect time to prepare a garden bed for spring, and Chris has written out easy instructions in his booklet, the 30 Square Foot Garden. The booklet is printed on 100% recycled paper, and costs only $5. It shows how easy it can be to get started in organic vegetable gardening.

We have sold a few hundred of these so far, which makes us feel wonderful knowing that there will be a few hundred new gardens around the US! It would make a perfect and inexpensive Christmas gift! Don’t forget the Garden Insects dvd as another gift idea for gardeners or children!

Breathe Deep Productions has received a generous grant from RSF Social Finance allowing us to donate DVDs of Garden Insects to public schools and libraries located in the central US: Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama to the East, and Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico to the West, and all the states in between. If you have a personal contact with a library or public school that you feel would use and appreciate a copy, please let us know.

We are particularly interested in sending multiple copies to an entire district or main library who can then pass it on to each branch.

Upcoming Event with Chris

Where: Steele Creek Nature Center and Park

Chris Korrow will present a program on Friday evening, May 29th 2009 (this will include a screening of "Garden Insects,") followed by an outdoor night walk. Activities will continue on Saturday morning, May 30th, and run well into the afternoon. This would include another presentation, a day time walk and a photo workshop.

Steele Creek Park is a 2200+ acre municipal park owned and operated by the City of Bristol, Tennessee.

Garden Insects to Air on PBS

Chris’s bug movie “Garden Insects” will once again air on PBS this spring. If you haven’t yet seen it, check it out March 18th and March 22nd at 9:30pm EST here in Kentucky on KET. Check your local listings nation-wide. PBS airs a 26-minute version, the DVD available on this site is 52 minutes. After watching the film, a recent viewer told Chris, “You are definitely a multi-media artist—from dirt to film.”
